Continue to fight for a cure in honor of every person lost. Your stories and strength help create awareness. And this will help advance research, treatment and hope.
The Story Behind the Symbol - Red Ribbon Week
Enrique "Kiki" Camarena grew up in a dirt-floored house with hopes and dreams of making a difference.
Camerena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. When he decided to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out of it. "I can't not do this," he told her. "I'm only one person, but I want to make a difference."
The DEA sent Camarena to work undercover in Mexico investigating a major drug cartel believed to include officers in the Mexican army, policy and government. On February 7, 1985, the 37-year-old Camarena left his office to meet his wife for lunch. Five men appeared at the agent's side and shoved him into a car. One month later, Camarena's body with found in a shallow grave. He had been tortured to death.
In honor of Camarena's memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin. Parents, sick of the destruction of alcohol and other drugs, had begun forming coalitions. Some of these new coalitions took Camarena as their model and embraced his belief that one person can make a difference. These coalitions also adopted the symbol of Camarena's memory, the red ribbon.
The National Family Partnership organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon campaign in 1988. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children.
The Story Behind the Symbol - The Pink Ribbon
The breast cancer pink ribbon has become an instantly recognizable symbol for supporting breast cancer awareness and the life-saving message of early detection.
The first breast cancer ribbon was designed by Charlotte Haley and was actually peach in color. Her version of the ribbon was created as a personal symbol of empathy and hope for a cure for breast cancer for relatives and friends.
Later, Alexandra Penny of Self Magazine and breast cancer survivor Evelyn Lauder of the Estee Lauder Company created the pink breast cancer ribbon to increase awareness.
The Story Behind the Symbol - The AIDS Ribbon
The red ribbon as a symbol of AIDS awareness was conceived in the spring of 1991 at the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus. Painter Frank Moore lived in upstate New York, where a neighboring family were displaying yellow ribbons in support of their soldier-daughter's safe return from the Persian Gulf. "It convinced me that it could be a metaphor for AIDS as well," he said. "It just seemed there were a lot more people ready to support action against AIDS than were publicly identified."
The idea was adopted by Visual AIDS, which as an organization made up of artists and art professionals, quite naturally promoted the use of visible symbols of the fight against AIDS. It started simply enough. From an early Visual AIDS handout: "Cut red ribbon 6" in length, then fold at the top into an inverted 'V' shape. Use a safety pin to attach to clothing."
The Ribbon Project was officially launched at the 45th Annual Tony Awards ceremony on June 2 of that year. All of the nominees and presents were encourages - with a good bit of success - to wear the ribbons. According to the Visual AIDS press release announcing The Ribbon Project, "The red ribbon (an inverted 'V' without a bow) will act as a symbol of our sympathy, support and hope for a day without AIDS. All involved with this project hope that by December 1st, World AIDS Day, these ribbons will be worn across the world."
The Story Behind the Symbol - The Rainbow Flag
Use of the rainbow flag by the gay community began in 1978 when it first appeared in the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. Borrowing symbolism from the hippie movement and black civil rights groups, San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag in response to a need for a symbol that could be used year after year. Baker and thirty volunteers hand-stitched and hand-dyed two huge prototype flags for the parade. The flags had eight stripes, each color representing a component of the community: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony and violet for spirit.
The next year Baker approached San Francisco Paramount Flag Company to mass-produce rainbow flags for the 1979 parade. Due to production constraints, such as the fact that hot pink was not a commercially-available color, pink and turquoise were removed from the design, and royal blue replaced indigo. This six-color version spread from San Francisco to other cities, and soon became the widely-known symbol of gay pride and diversity it is today. It is even officially recognized by the International Congress of Flag Makers. In 1994, a huge 30-foot-wide by one-mile-long rainbow flag was carried by 10,000 people in New York's Stonewall 25 Parade.
The Story Behind the Symbol - Blue Ribbons Against Child Abuse
In the spring of 1989, a grandmother named Bonnie Finney took a stand against child abuse in Norfolk, Virginia. She tied a blue ribbon on the antenna of her mini van in remembrance of her late grandson and as a signal to her community that child abuse continues to be a devastating social plaque.
Her grandson, Michael Wayne "Bubba" Dickenson and his siblings lived an at-risk existence in an abusive home environment. Despite Finney's efforts to intervene on behalf of her grandchildren, his mother's boyfriend murdered three-year-old Bubba. His body was found, bound, beaten and bruised, in a weighted toolbox at the bottom of a canal.
"One day I was just thinking about all the bruises I had seen on my grandchildren," Finney said. "I just decided I was going to tie a blue ribbon on my van. Why blue? I intend never to forget the battered, bruised bodies of my grandchildren. Blue serves as a constant reminder to me to fight for protection for our children."
Finney's personal campaign to raise public awareness of child maltreatment was joined by a Norfolk parent assistance program and a local radio station. Soon, stores, businesses, schools, churches, civic organizations and social service agencies were participating in the campaign and thousands of blue ribbons were displayed in the name of child abuse prevention. The spirit of her blue ribbon grew and inspired a statewide community-based effort to prevent child abuse in every town, every community and every city and county.
Bonnie Finney's simple act of education and remembrance has inspired a nationwide movement and led states throughout the country to participate in the campaign by designating the month of April each year Child Abuse Prevention Month.
"The blue ribbon serves as a constant reminder to fight for the protection of children," Finney explained. "We must protect our most precious gift of all - our children. Even if we just change one child's life, it would be worth it. I don't want other parents or grandparents to go through what we've been through. During the month of April, I hope all Americans will wear a blue ribbon, put one on their cars, give them to friends and tell anyone who asks what it means. You may save a child's life."
Can one person make a difference? Bonnie Finney did...and you can too. Wear a blue ribbon in April. Encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same. Learn something about child abuse in your community and share what you learn with others. Knowledge and the will to make a difference will make a difference for our children.
The Story Behind the Symbol - The Purple Ribbon
The symbol of the Domestic Violence Movement is the purple ribbon. The exact history of the purple ribbon is somewhat difficult to pinpoint. Over the years, a number of sources have been credited with originating the use of the purple ribbon as a unifying symbol of courage, survival, honor and dedication to ending domestic violence. Across the country, families and friends of victims have adopted the purple ribbon to remember and honor their loved ones who have lost their lives at the hands of a person they once loved and trusted. Shelters and local battered women's programs use the purple ribbon to raise awareness about the crime of domestic violence in their communities. The purple ribbon also has been recognized by state legislatures in proclamations commemorating October at National Domestic Violence Month. In addition to the demonstration of support for victims and advocates, the display of purple ribbons throughout a community conveys a powerful message that there's no place for domestic violence in the homes, neighborhoods, workplaces or schools of its citizens.
