National Breastfeeding Month
To bring additional attention to the benefits of breastfeeding and to support and encourage mothers in achieving their breastfeeding goals, the United States Breastfeeding Committee recognizes the month of August as National Breastfeeding Month. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that healthy mothers exclusively breastfeed (providing no other food or liquid) their infants for the first six months of life. In addition, as part of its Healthy People 2020 initiative, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services aims to increase breastfeeding rates.
