National Runaway Prevention Month is spearheaded each year by the National Runaway Safeline and National Network for Youth. The goals of National Runaway Prevention Month are two-fold: To raise awareness of the runaway and homeless youth crisis and the issues that these young people face and to educate the public about solutions and the role they can play in ending youth homelessness.

National Runaway Prevention Month recognizes that each year, thousands of U.S. youth run away from home, are asked to leave their homes, and/or become homeless for a variety of reasons leaving many young people without a safe place to stay. They sleep on the streets, in cars or on their friends’ couches.

Meeting an online friend in person can be life-changing in a positive way, but it is important to feel safe throughout the process.

When it comes to an actual meeting, a few simple steps can ensure you are as safe as possible. Take a friend along; if you go alone, share your plans, including your location, with a friend or family member. Provide critical information about your online friend, such as name, number, and picture. Meet in a well-lit, open public place. Oftentimes, coffee shops, restaurants and bars are good meeting spots. If at any point you feel uncomfortable during the meeting, head to the restroom or make an excuse to leave, and never leave your drink or purse unattended.
