Tsunami Preparedness Week
Tsunami Preparedness Week, observed March 19 - 27, encourages coastal residents, as well as people across the country that travel to the beach for vacation, to learn about tsunamis and prepare themselves and their families for this emergency.
Tsunamis are a series of large ocean waves generated by major earthquakes beneath the ocean floor or major landslides into the ocean. The waves can strike the coast with devastating force within minutes after a severe earthquake and the danger period can continue for many hours after.
