World Thalassemia Day, observed May 8, calls attention to thalassemia, a disorder characterised by abnormal formation of haemoglobin. This abnormal haemoglobin results in improper transport of oxygen due to the destruction of red blood cells. People suffering from thalassemia have fewer red blood cells circulating in their blood and suffer from mild or severe anaemia.
