World Thalassemia Day, observed in May, calls attention to thalassemia, a disorder characterised by abnormal formation of hemoglobin. This abnormal hemoglobin results in improper transport of oxygen due to the destruction of red blood cells. People suffering from thalassemia have fewer red blood cells circulating in their blood and suffer from mild or severe anemia.
World Thalassemia Day allows people to come together to learn about preventive measures and ways to avoid the spread of thalassemia from one person to another. World Thalassemia Day encourages the exchange of ideas to cure thalassemia across the world.
