Australians Sally J. Finn and Peter Streker established Overdose Awareness Day in 2001. Its purpose was to commemorate those who have lost their lives to overdose. It also supports loved ones whose lives have been affected by drug abuse. Not only are lives lost, but families broken while dealing with addition and the loss of a loved one.

International Overdose Awareness Day’s spreads information about how to detect signs of substance abuse and overdose. In addition, it explains what to do when encountering a person who may be having an adverse reaction to a drug. Signs include disorientation, agitation, difficulty breathing, and vomiting. These signs should not be ignored.

Overdose is increasing a global problem. A 2014 United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) 2014 report estimated that overdose occurs in approximately 183,000 people around the world every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States.

Due to this, a vast majority of overdose deaths occur due to opioid abuse. Opioids are a class of drugs that reduce the intensity of pain by interacting with proteins called opioids. Opioids are located in the human brain, spinal cord, and other organs. Opiates include substances like heroin, and legally prescribed medication such as oxycodone, codeine, and morphine.
